Privacy policy

Version 1.0 · October 2026 · applies to the RainSignal app (iOS and Android) and rainsignal.eu · Nederlandse versie

RainSignal is an app by 1338, based in the Netherlands (Chamber of Commerce number and address: see 1338.nl). We built the app so that we need to know as little about you as possible. Below is exactly what we process and why.

What we process

DataPurposeRetention
Coordinates of the places you choose (current location and favourites), rounded to 0.01 degree (about 1 kilometre)To calculate the rain forecast for those places and send alertsAs long as the place is in the app; deleted immediately when you remove it
A push token from Apple or Google, platform, country, language and app version, and a random installation IDTo deliver alerts to your deviceUntil you turn off notifications or delete the app; tokens that no longer work are removed immediately, otherwise after 180 days without contact
Your settings (language, threshold, quiet hours, morning briefing)To send alerts the way you want themLinked to the installation ID; installations without contact for 13 months are erased completely
Proof of purchase for Plus (App Store or Google Play)To activate and verify PlusFor as long as the subscription runs, plus 1 year for accounting

We do not store a location history, name, email address or account. The app works without signing in.

Your current location

The app reads your location only while it is open, never in the background. If you choose "current location" as a place for alerts, the app sends the rounded coordinates to our server when you open it, and we alert you about rain where you last opened the app. You can also refuse permission and use only fixed places; everything still works.

Advertising

The free version shows ads through Google AdMob. In the European Union we first ask for your consent through the consent screen (UMP) before personalised ads are shown. If you choose "do not consent", you only see non-personalised ads. With RainSignal Plus you see no ads and the ad SDK is not activated. For what Google processes, see Google's privacy policy.

Statistics and errors

We do not use third-party analytics SDKs. On the server we count, anonymously, how many alerts we send and how often the API is called, without device IDs.

Processors

Data sources

Rain data comes from KNMI, DWD, MET Norway and the European radar network (EUMETNET OPERA); place names from GeoNames. These parties receive no data about you: our server fetches the data and does its own calculations, and looks up place names in its own list. Only for MET Norway does our server query per place, with a rounded coordinate (about 1 km) and nothing that can be traced back to you or your device.

Your rights

In the app, under Settings, you can have all your data deleted from our server with one button. After that your device ID is gone from our systems. Questions or requests about your data: privacy@1338.nl. You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority in your own country.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will publish the new version here and mention it in the app. The version date is at the top.
